Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a relatively new technology that has emerged with the advent of more powerful computers. A geographic information system combines the powerful capabilities of databases and often global positioning systems (GPS) with computer graphics to provide a means of managing massive amounts of information. Thus making it possible to compile data in a more easily visualized way using maps and aerial photographs. These systems are extremely well suited for managing complex systems such as utility infrastructures, environmental mapping projects and many more applications.
